Every year, workers from different parts of Africa travel to the United Kingdom to participate in professional and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes delivered by Global Skills Hub United Kingdom. Among the most popular programmes are Leadership in the Workplace and Mental Health in the Workplace, which have attracted professionals seeking to strengthen their workplace skills and professional capacity.
However, international training can involve significant costs, including flights, accommodation, visas, transportation and other associated expenses. These costs can make valuable professional development opportunities inaccessible to many African workers.
To address this challenge, Global Skills Hub United Kingdom has developed a new strategy to make selected professional development programmes accessible online to workers across Africa without requiring them to travel to the United Kingdom while they can send selected representatives once in a year..
This initiative is called the Africa Workforce Development Initiative (AWDI).
The initiative is designed to expand access to affordable, structured and flexible professional development through online learning. It will initially focus on areas that are particularly relevant to today's workforce, including Leadership in the Workplace and Mental Health in the Workplace, with additional programmes such as Conflict Resolution and several others to follow.
Bringing Professional Development Closer to Africa's Workforce
Quality professional development should not be limited by geography or the ability to afford international travel.
Through the Africa Workforce Development Initiative, Global Skills Hub United Kingdom is making selected UK-based professional development opportunities accessible to African workers through affordable online training.

Through online delivery, participants will be able to access course materials, video lectures, assignments, examinations and learner support from their own countries.
The First Programme
The inaugural Africa Workforce Development Initiative programme will run from January to March 2027 and will feature two separate courses:
Leadership in the Workplace
8 CPD learning hours
Mental Health in the Workplace
7 CPD learning hours
Combined CPD learning: 15 hours
Delivery: Online
Commitment fee: USD 20
Expected programme commencement: Second week of January 2027
Expected completion: Early March 2027
The USD 20 commitment fee covers the programme, assessments and applicable CPD certificates, with no hidden training charges.
Designed for African Workers
The programme has been specifically designed with working professionals in mind. We recognise that workers have demanding professional and personal responsibilities. The programme therefore provides flexibility, allowing participants to manage their learning without unnecessary pressure.
Video lectures will be released during the programme period together with assignments. Each course contains three modules. Participants will also have access to an online platform where they can ask questions and receive support.
At the end of each course, participants will complete a timed online multiple-choice examination. The required examination pass mark is 70%.
Successful participants will receive the certificate associated with the relevant course.
Looking Beyond the First Programme
The January–March 2027 programme is only the beginning.
The Africa Workforce Development Initiative intends to introduce additional affordable professional development opportunities for African workers, including programmes focusing on Leadership and Conflict Resolution and other areas of workplace capacity development.
Our long-term objective is to build a platform through which workers, professional associations, employers, trade unions and other organisations across Africa can access affordable and relevant professional development opportunities.

Official Launch
The Africa Workforce Development Initiative(AWDI) will be officially launched during the 5th Africa Education Summit, taking place on 22–23 March 2027 at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
The launch will mark an important step in Global Skills Hub United Kingdom's commitment to expanding access to professional development opportunities for African workers and reducing the geographical and financial barriers associated with international training. At the 5th Africa Education Summit and Conference in March, we also plan to launch a yearly training programme for African union leaders. The training will take place yearly in the United Kingdom to be stepped down to union members back home.
